Jess named one of the top 10 industry leaders

Jess was just named one of the Top 10 Industry Leaders under the age of 40 by Cattle Business Weekly. Find out why and read Jess’ full profile here

Each of the top 10 live in, or have ties to, the Great Plains region. “It’s an impressive lineup of people who have taken on roles in the agricultural industry to help provide a future for the next generation of farmers and ranchers,” said Codi Vallery-Mills of the Cattle Business Weekly on October 12, 2009.

Congrats Jess!

The so-called “Omnivore’s Dilemma”

As I travel around the country and attend events here in Washington, D.C., I hear a lot about Michael Pollan’s “Omnivore’s Dilemma.” For the most part, I don’t have a problem with Mr. Pollan’s story; however, he does leave out some very important facts, and he takes wide strokes in glazing over production agriculture and in doing so paints production agriculture as a problematic, unbalanced, and obesity-creating machine. Mr. Pollan fails to recognize the massive amounts of food required to feed the nation and world. I would agree that we all might need to make some changes, but demonizing food production is not the answer. I think Missouri farmer, Blake Hurst, sets the record straight. DTN’s Chris Clayton provides some excellent details and info in what I would definitely call “the rest of the story” here.

Is it too early for snow? (Not in Montana!)

Last night, I got back from the Young Ag Leaders Conference in Helena. I spent the night at my grandparents Leo and Beulah’s house, south of Red Lodge. It was snowing last night and continued to snow throughout the day. I had a nice time with my Grandparents. Grandpa and I journeyed over to Belfry to have coffee with my Uncle Lowell and Lou Peterson. The roads were a bit rough; despite the fact that my Grandpa is nearly 90 years old, he was a master of the winter driving conditions! I headed out for Billings around 3pm. The snow was coming down on Main Street and created a very cool setting. Check out the video and pictures!
