Northern California regional cattlemen’s meeting
The road adventure continues. I flew in from Denver, Colorado to Reno, Nevada last night. Today, Jon and Jane Wooster picked me up in Reno, and we made our way to the Northern California regional cattlemen’s meeting in Susanville.
This was my first time of speaking in California, and I spoke to an enthusiastic and smart group of cattle industry leaders. It was a great opportunity to meet new ranchers and see old friends. The pictures show Jon and I starting out the presentation followed by a few comments from me. I can’t thank these ranchers enough for their hospitality. Here’s to many more good years for these California ranchers!
A no-sale on the road in Wyoming
After a good night’s rest at the Showboat Hotel in Casper, Wyoming I got up and moderated the USCA Horn Wrap teleconference call. It was an action-packed call as we discussed the private property issue affecting Mike and Terry Karrel’s ranch. After concluding the call, I pulled the Blue Bandit (my trusty ranch pickup) onto interstate 25 and pointed him South. My drive was marked by several phone conversations with my Dad as we discussed numbers and bids that we would accept on our cattle that were being marketed on the Western Video Sale. Just as I pulled out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, I got the call from Dad- the numbers bid for our cattle on the sale were too low so we took a no sale. Looks like Dad and I will play the markets this fall and hope that they pick up and provide some stronger numbers and bids.
My destination for this trip was Greeley, Colorado. I met up with Colorado ranchers Wayne Rusher, John Reid, and Gerald Schreiber. We were invited to attend Congresswoman Betsy Markey’s (Colorado, 4th District) agriculture town hall meeting. Also attending this event was Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Collin Peterson. After the afternoon event, we had a nice time at an evening reception. Check out the pictures above.
Pictures of the Hathaway ranch
Today Dad, Grant Dunning, and I moved cattle to the back pastures of the ranch at Hathaway.
Take a look at the pictures here, and tell me it’s not good to be on horse, enjoying God’s creation on a summer day!
Start in Denver, then on to Wyoming
Today was a good day as I grabbed lunch American Cowboy Magazine publisher Bill Garrels. We discussed putting together some joint USCA/American Cowboy events. The sky is truly the limit on these projects!
Overall, Denver has been good, but I have to say: the traffic can be a bit maddening. I could not have been more happy to point the Blue Bandit north and head for Torrington, Wyoming. I called a top hand and good friend of the cattle industry Lex Madden to let him know I was in town for the Friday cattle sale at Torrington Livestock Market.
Lex promptly sent the Torrington Livestock Market field representative Jeff Ward to pick me up to meet the Madden family and some area ranchers for dinner. I had a great time with this crew and can’t thank them enough for their kindness and hospitality.
Introducing the Society of Range Management
Today was another exciting and action packed day! Western Skies Strategies is now representing the Society of Range Management (SRM). After having breakfast with my good friend Trent Noyes, I headed over to the SRM office. It was great to meet the talented and dedicated SRM staff. There are some exciting projects being worked on, and today was a very productive day for outlining the projects and mapping out next steps. For more information about SRM, visit them at http://www.rangelands.org.
Trust, too, that we’ll be providing additional updates here on the blog for what SRM is up to next!
